SM2508 Live Demo at FMS 2024: A Game-Changer for AI PCs with Best-in-Class Power Efficiency and Low Power Consumption

At FMS 2024, Silicon Motion showcased the exceptional performance of the SM2508, our latest PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe 2.0 client SSD controller. Designed specifically for AI PCs and gaming consoles, the SM2508 has set a new benchmark in the industry with its best-in-class power efficiency and superior data performance.

SM2508 Live Demo Results

In the live demonstration, the SM2508 impressed with its incredible speed and efficiency, achieving over 14GB/s in both sequential read and write performance as measured by the CrystalDiskMark benchmark.

These impressive results underscore the SM2508's capability to handle intensive AI workloads and high-speed data processing, making it an ideal solution for next-generation computing.

Why SM2508 is the Best Solution for AI PCs

As highlighted in Silicon Motion's keynote speech at FMS 2024 by Robert Fan, Senior Vice President of Global Sales, the SM2508 is more than just a high-performance SSD controller—it's a critical enabler for the AI PC era. According to Gartner, by 2025, over 40% of PCs will be AI-capable. For the AI PC, Silicon Motion is introducing the SM2508- the best data efficient and power efficient PCIe Gen5 controller for client SSDs.

The SM2508 offers three times better data efficiency compared to previous models while consuming less than 7 watts of power. That's incredibly low power for the performance it delivers, and it is the best in the industry today. This controller features 8 NAND channels supporting up to 8TB capacity and can handle up to 3600 MT/s NAND speed- delivering sequential read speeds up to 14.5 GB/s, write speeds up to 13.6 GB/s and up to 2.5M IOPs. This represents an incredible combination of data efficiency and low power consumption. This controller is set to redefine what we expect from SSDs in terms of power efficiency and data efficiency:

  • Best-in-Class Power Consumption: Usually, when you increase performance, you also increase the power. Our new controller uses TSMC's 6nm EUV process along with some innovative power management design techniques to cut the power consumption in half compared to existing PCIe Gen5 controllers using 12nm process. As shown in the chart, we're achieving 50% lower power consumption with the 6nm process, all while boosting performance compared to 12nm designs.

  • Breakthrough Power Efficiency: This translates to breakthrough power efficiency, measured in GB/s per watt. The SM2508 controller isn't just a little better than the competition; it's a lot better. We're seeing a 70% improvement in SSD power efficiency compared to our competitors. Look at the numbers: The average active power efficiency for our competitor is 1,273 MB per watt whereas our controller achieves almost 2200 MB per watt. That's a 70% increase. It means that the SM2508 SSDs run cooler, use less power, and will help notebook batteries last longer - all while delivering top-tier performance.

Robert Fan emphasized that the SM2508 is designed to excel in the age of Edge AI, across multiple platforms—from personal computers and laptops to gaming systems and industrial applications—thanks to its best-in-class power consumption, breakthrough power efficiency, and remarkable low-power states. This is why major NAND OEMs and module makers are adopting our SM2508 in their upcoming PCIe Gen5 SSD products.
